Did you know that Canada does not have STATES like we do in the U.S.A.? Instead, they call their different areas PROVINCES. I started my vacation in the province of Nova Scotia. Look at a map to see if you can find Nova Scotia...looking at a map of Canada you should have to look all the way to the east. Nova Scotia means "New Scotland" and was named by the Scottish people who first came to that area. You can see that Nova Scotia is almost all the way surrounded by ocean water...so fishing is big business for the people of Nova Scotia. This picture is from a quaint fishing village.
There are many lighthouses all over the island. Lighthouses have always been important to safely guide fishing boats back to port with their bright lights. A famous one is located at PEGGY'S COVE. This lighthouse was built on a lot of huge rocks and actually has the post office for the town inside the base of the lighthouse! I'm sure you all would love jumping and climbing over all of these rocks!
We also traveled up to the north of Nova Scotia where we were amazed by the tides in the BAY OF FUNDY. The tides can go up or down as much as 46 feet in just 6 hours. These changing tides are the most extreme in the whole world! Look at these two pictures to see the difference a few hours made in the levels of the water.
At the Bay of Fundy we got to go out on a boat to look for whales that like to feed there in the summer. We got to see several different humpback whales. The ones we saw the most were named Luna and Teather. They were right next to the boat! Look at the picture of Luna's tail as he is diving down deep in the water to eat more food. I learned that each whale has a different color pattern on their tails just like we all have different fingerprints. How cool!
